Bardia National Park is Nepal’s largest undisturbed wilderness in the lowland Terai, covering nearly 968 km² of forests, grasslands, river corridors, and wetlands. Anchored by the mighty Karnali and Babai rivers, the park supports a mosaic of habitats—sal-dominated woodland (~70%), savannah-like grasslands, dense mixed-hardwood groves, and riverine thickets  This extraordinary diversity nurtures approximately 53 species of mammals, over 400 bird species, more than 23 reptiles and amphibians, and at least 125 fish types in its rivers and oxbow lakes

Wildlife here includes iconic megafauna—Royal Bengal tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, Asian elephant, sloth & Himalayan black bears, sambar, hog & spotted deer—with renowned conservation efforts boosting their populations, especially rhinos and elephants in the Babai valley  The rivers are alive too: gharial & mugger crocodiles sunning on sandy banks, Gangetic dolphins surfacing in deep pools, and the Mahseer gliding beneath fast rapids

The park offers a layered visitor experience: early-morning guided jungle walks and off-trail elephant safaris deep in the southern forest; jeep safaris through grasslands with panoramic views; peaceful canoe or raft rides along the Karnali—prime moments to witness riverine wildlife and birdlife up close  Birdwatching is exceptional: you might spot Bengal florican, sarus crane, whites-rumped vulture, or lesser florican—a paradise for passionate birders

Complementing the wild tapestry are the Tharu villages that nestle around the park’s buffer. The indigenous Tharu people, with roots dating back centuries, welcome visitors with cultural performances, homestay hospitality, and traditional handicrafts—adding a human story to the natural grandeur. Climate throughout the October–April dry season is pleasant and ideal for eco-tours, while summers bring heat and monsoon rains that recharge the grasslands and forests .
