Seven reasons to walk to Annapurna Base Camp

Seven reasons to walk to Annapurna Base Camp

Annapurna Base Camp brings together village paths, forest and a mountain amphitheatre in one walking journey. These are seven things to look forward to as you plan your route.

1. A changing landscape

The approach passes terraced hillsides, bamboo and rhododendron forest before opening into the higher landscape of the Annapurna Sanctuary. The changes along the way are part of the attraction.

2. The Annapurna panorama

Machhapuchhre and the surrounding Annapurna peaks shape the view as you walk. Cloud and weather change what you see, giving each day its own character.

3. Time in mountain villages

The region is home to Gurung, Magar and other communities. Village stays offer a chance to learn about local life, share meals and listen to the people who call these hills home.

4. Ghandruk and its surroundings

Some itineraries include Ghandruk, with its stone houses and views across the valley. Ask about village visits and local cultural sites when choosing your route, and seek permission before photographing people.

5. An optional Poon Hill extension

Ghorepani and Poon Hill can be included in a longer itinerary. This adds a different viewpoint and extra walking days; it is not part of every Annapurna Base Camp programme.

6. A walking journey to prepare for

The attraction of the route does not make it suitable for every traveller. It involves sustained walking and high mountain terrain. Tell the team about your trekking experience, available time and expectations so the proposed itinerary can be discussed in detail. Reaching base camp is never a guaranteed outcome.

7. Time in Pokhara

Pokhara is a natural starting point for exploring this part of the Annapurna region. Allow time for the journey there and back, and confirm transfers and walking stages with the team rather than relying on a fixed travel time.
